Kyoto’s geiko and maiko welcomed the new year in timeless style as they gathered for traditional opening ceremonies across the city’s famed entertainment districts. Dressed in elegant black crested kimono, they renewed their commitment to preserving centuries-old arts and culture. The celebration also featured a special performance by dance master Yachiyo Inoue, while top-earning geiko Miwako embraced her zodiac year with a spirited goal: to gallop into the year ahead like a horse.

About 80 geiko and maiko gathered and chanted their pledge, “We take pride in tradition and will strive to master our arts.”
