Ever wondered if you have what it takes to design the next great Gundam model? At Bandai Spirits’ interactive Plastic Model Design Museum in Shizuoka, visitors become “model designers” for a day, exploring every step of the model-making process—from concept sketches and mold design to packaging. With thousands of model kits on display, hands-on design challenges, and even the chance to create your own custom model box, it’s part museum, part workshop, and a dream destination for Gundam and hobby fans alike.
Since opening in September 2025, the museum has welcomed visitors as honorary “plastic model designers,” guiding them through a collection of roughly 4,300 model kits and the fascinating world of model production. With easy-to-follow displays, colorful diagrams, and support in Japanese, English, Korean, and Chinese, fans from around the world can dive into the craft behind their favorite model kits.
While ticket applications are currently limited to residents of Japan, international visitors can still join the experience when accompanied by someone who has secured tickets. The 90-minute adventure offers a behind-the-scenes look at Bandai’s model-making magic, with staff using demonstrations, conversation, and even a bit of showmanship to bring the process to life. Tickets start at ¥2,860 for adults and ¥1,100 for children, making it a must-visit stop for hobby fans looking to level up their appreciation of plastic model craftsmanship.
