Fans of Hayao Miyazaki’s “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind” are getting a treat in December. The Oscar-winning anime has been adapted into a Kabuki work that is currently being performed at the Shinbashi Enbujo Theatre in Higashiginza in Tokyo, Japan. The play includes Kabuki superstars Onoe Kikunosuke and Nakamura Shichinosuke. Kikunosuke plays Nausicaa, pictured above, and he previously said he has been preparing for the role for five years! The play will run through December 25.
But that isn’t the only Kabuki play that people will get to see in December, as another work based on “Snow White” is currently being performed at the Kabukiza Theatre in Higashiginza.
Bando Tamasaburo, pictured above, is performing the lead role in “Honcho Shirayukihime Monogatari”, the “Snow White” adaptation. This play will run through December 26.
And in another interesting twist to Kabuki, the play “Komori no Yasusan” is currently being performed at the National Theatre in Hanzomon in Tokyo, Japan.
This play is based on Charlie Chaplin’s “City Lights,” and Matsumoto Koshiro plays the lead role, picture above. This play will run through December 26.
It’s nice to see that the traditional Kabuki-style is being applied to famous films in different genres. Fingers-crossed that we will get to see a Cowboy Bebop adaptation one day, or at least Pokemon.
