For those of you that were watching the 69th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen (69th Red and White Song Battle), you were treated to kendama history.

During the performance of Hiroshi Miyama, a Japanese Enka singer, 124 people—including Miyama himself—attempted to land a kendama trick where you get the ball onto the big cup. And they did it! Officials from the Guinness Book of World Records were on hand to witness this kendama trick landed 124 times, on the first try!

Kendama is a traditional Japanese toy, and it is a variation of the traditional “cup and ball” game found in America. The goal is to try and land the ball on one of the three “cups” or on the “spike” at the top. This is a fun way to pass the time, and you don’t even need any batteries! Needless to say, everyone at the Kohaku event was super excited, and what a way to start the New Year for all of these people landing the trick. And who knew that Japanese Enka singers were so good at kendama, right?
